This is a PDF sewing pattern for the 1940s-inspired Polstead Heath Messenger Bag, which is the perfect style and size to take you effortlessly from town to country wear. It features a pleated front pocket and shaped flap reminiscent of the courier bags of the wartime years. A template for an interior pocket is included.

This style can be made with or without the front tab detail, and with a self-fabric strap, or a purchased leather strap attached with tabs. The Polstead Heath Messenger Bag has a flat construction (no darts or box corners) and can be made using several contrasting fabrics. Complete the retro look with vintage buttons.

The bag’s finished dimensions are: Height 12½ (32cm) Width 15 ” (38cm)

This PDF has 19 pages—10 pages including the cover, general, cutting out and step-by-step instructions, and 9 pattern sheets with the templates, which you must print and cut out. All of the templates are actual size. As many of the templates are too big to fit on one sheet, you must cut out and tape these templates together where shown. Instructions for this are clear.
